KIKI'S MEDIEVAL MALI TIMELINE

8000 B.C.

Ancestors of the West Africans appear in the Niger River area.

2750 B.C.

During the Old and Middle Stone Ages, West Africans gather food, hunt, fish, and dig for roots in what is called the Sahel.

2000 B.C.

The Joliba and the Quorra rivers join to form the Niger River in West Africa.

500 B.C.

Iron in general use in West Africa.

146 B.C. to 31 B.C.

Roman conquest of North Africa; Berbers’ southern migration begins.

200 A.D.

About 1 million people live in the Sahel.

What We Want To Learn

1. We want to learn how to make the most popular food?
- Well first you need to get pinto beans, and squash. Secondly they cooked the beans on a small stove on low because fuel was scares. After they cooked the beans they cooked the squash. They let the beans cool while the squash was cooking. Then the Medieval African people took out bowls and served themselves.

2. We want to learn about what they wore?
-They wore colorful wraps made out of cloth. Medieval African people took the cloth and wrapped them around their bodies. The women made them and sold them.

3. We want to learn about what Medieval African people live in?
-They lived in little Huts made out of wood, mud and sometimes bricks that they made.

4. We want to know what the most popular food in
Medieval Africa was?
-The most popular food was beans with vegetables.

5. We want to know about the people and how we are like them?
-First of all we eat food that they ate, and secondly some people here (LA) wear the wraps they made.

Medieval African people spoke Arabic in the north area, French in the west and central area, and Portuguese in Angolia and Mozambique.
They have different flags for different sections of Medieval Africa.
MALI GHANA

The people worship spirits, their fiends, and especially the people in their family

The Republic of Mali is located in western Africa. It is a landlocked country, bordered by Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Senegal, and Mauritania. There are more than 11.5 million people in Mali. About 90% of the population is Muslim. Most Malians speak the Bambara language, but the official language is French.

The people are happy. The common people worked very hard. Nobles were
more comfortable. Everyone made time for music, and art.

Medieval African society did not seem to care about the differences between rich and poor people that plagued Europe and Asia. South of the Sahara even kings and queens were not so much richer than their people. Evan though the kings and queens weren’t that rich, they still had all the power over there subjects.

In Medieval Africa they seemed to have had slaves from the earliest times, who mainly acted like personal servants. Even before 1500 AD, when the Europeans were not involved, the slave trade was already taking thousands of Africans every year from the from their families and homes and selling them. Most of the captured slaves were probably Bantu people. Some of them had to walk across the Sahara Desert to be slaves in North Africa, or to work in the salt mines in Sahara. Some were sent from to India or the Persian Gulf, to work in salt mines there. An estimated total of ten thousand slaves a year were exported in the years before 1500.

Timbuktu (12th century) Mali

In the 12th century, Timbuktu was at the crossroads of the four most important caravan paths supplying the Arab world, which then spanned from the Middle East all the way to Spain. The accumulation of wealth made it one of the wealthiest places on earth at the time. This allowed one of the first universities in the history of humankind to be established– the celebrated Islamic university called the Koranic Sankore, where 20,000 students studied law, medicine, rhetoric, etc. Today, it remains with us as a powerful myth and, in this way, resembles another Ancient Wonder, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

The market had a lot of fish, beans, vegetables, and fruit! Most people went to the market at least once a day. Children got to pick out one thing they wanted every other day. Mothers usually went to the market. Sometimes the fathers or men went. They went when the mother was sick.
Medieval African people also hunted for their food. Sometimes they brought back wildabeasts, elephants,antelope,fish, or birds. They grew crops like corn, and vegetables.
Ghana
The people were farmers and miners and artists. They made the most wonderful fabrics. Using mud to make designs on dyed cloth and set in the sun made mud cloth. The sun baked the mud and created a design in the cloth. They had fresh fruit and sweet potatoes. They had the Niger River, which provided water for farming, washing, and bathing, and fish and waterfowl to eat. They worked very hard, but their life was good. They had ample food. They were protected. They sang. They laughed.

Couscous
(North African pasta)

Yield: 4-6 servings

INGREDIENTS PREP AMOUNT
Couscous 2 cups
Water or stock 2 cups
Salt 1/2 tsp
METHOD
Basic Steps: Boil → Mix → Rest → Fluff

1. Place couscous in a large bowl.
2. Bring water or stock and salt to a boil
3. Pour the boiling liquid all at once into the couscous. Stir well and cover the bowl with a lid, plate or plastic wrap. Let set for about 10-15 minutes.
4. Remove the cover and fluff the couscous with a fork. Stir in 1 Tbsp of butter or olive oil if you like.

VARIATIONS

* Use couscous as a base for cold salads or hot side dishes by adding any of a variety of flavorings: citrus vinaigrettes, curry powder, fruit. Use your imagination.

NOTES

* Couscous is a commonly served starch in the region of Northwest Africa known as the Maghreb. In typical Maghreb cooking, couscous is steamed over a stew, or tagine, in a utensil known as a couscousière. The method above does not make as fluffy or fragrant a dish, but it is much easier.
* Couscous looks like a small grain, but is actually a type of semolina pasta. Variations of the pasta are found in Spain, Sicily, the Middle East and even Brazil. One type, Israeli couscous, is about the size of a small pea.

Since Africa is such a big place, different people in different parts of Africa wear different types of clothing. People think that they started wearing leather, fur, and loincloths. The first jewelry was most likely made of seashells and feathers.

After many thousands of years, they began to make lighter, less sweaty kinds of clothes. People think that the first kind of cloth made in Africa was pounded bark fibers. What they would do is they would peel the bark off trees and then pound it with a rock until the fibers get soft and the hard part breaks off. This would make small pieces of cloth which can be pounded or sewn together. People in Uganda witch was in Central Africa, used the bark of fig trees and raffia palms.
